It’s not just a book—it’s the world’s largest pop-up book right here in Los Angeles!

Created to celebrate the centennial of the Los Angeles Central Library, the monumental Luceros y Penumbras, meaning “Starlight and Shadows,” transforms the library’s Rotunda into a larger-than-life storybook experience.

Featuring artwork conceived by Los Angeles artist and printmaker Daniel González, the installation was designed to rekindle the childhood excitement of opening a pop-up book while inviting visitors to reflect on the role libraries have played in their lives.

Constructing a book of this extraordinary size required industrial-strength cardboard and innovative engineering. Because the fully assembled book was too large to pass through the library’s doors, it had to be designed in smaller sections, transported to the second floor, and carefully reassembled inside the Rotunda.

The spectacular installation officially earned Guinness World Records certification as the world’s largest pop-up book.
