>> 00:05 - Its escalating already rising tension in the region

>> 00:17 - Administration officials say the boat left Venezuela loaded with drugs
>> 00:21 - On a well known drug trafficking route
>> 00:24 - The Trump administration has set its sights on the Venezuelan president, accusing him
>> 00:29 - Of heading a drug cartel in his country, calling it a terrorist organization
>> 00:35 - The president is very clear that he's going to use
>> 00:37 - The full power of America, his full might of the United States,
>> 00:41 - To take on and eradicate these drug cartels, no matter where they're
>> 00:44 - Operating from, and no matter
>> 00:47 - How long they've been able to act with impunity, that those days are over.
>> 00:50 - Joining me now to discuss Mariana Atencio, a freelance journalist who actually fled
>> 00:55 - Venezuela to the US almost 17 years ago.
>> 00:58 - Welcome to CNN. This morning.
>> 01:02 - How do you thank you for having me.
>> 01:04 - Okay, so we've seen an actual military strike. And this was happening as
>> 01:08 - Nicolas Maduro was kind of already on edge trying to use this war rhetoric.
>> 01:14 - Can you give me some context
>> 01:16 - Of how this escalated so quickly?
>> 01:20 - So, Audie, we have seen a level of tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela that we haven't seen in years.
>> 01:26 - Essentially, Trump has mobilized around eight boats, a submarine
>> 01:30 - And almost 5000 Marines to the southern Caribbean to combat drugs
>> 01:35 - That leave through Venezuela
>> 01:37 - Venezuela because of its
>> 01:39 - Geographic location, is the perfect transit country for these drugs to leave for Europe and the United States.
>> 01:46 - So it's not a producer,
>> 01:47 - It's a transit country.
>> 01:49 - But things really escalated as the Trump administration,
>> 01:53 - Plain and simple, named Nicolas Maduro the leader of this drug cartel that uses the full power of the executive and the military to transport these drugs.
>> 02:04 - The DEA has been kicked out of the country since 2005.
>> 02:08 - And as the rhetoric escalated,
>> 02:10 - We're seeing these tensions build up in the southern Caribbean
>> 02:14 - As both nations respond.
>> 02:16 - Can you give us a sense of what international community thinks about this?
>> 02:21 - Do people say the same about Maduro in terms of the drug industry there, as you said,
>> 02:26 - Being a hub for transport?
>> 02:30 - All Venezuelans, all have known for years that the Maduro regime is a narco cartel, that they lead essentially a cartel called the cartel of the sons.
>> 02:41 - And that is because
>> 02:42 - Of the son insignia emblazoned in military uniforms.
>> 02:46 - Latin America and the Caribbean, however,
>> 02:49 - Is very divided along ideological lines. So you will see countries like Colombia, like Mexico,
>> 02:55 - Not have such a harsh stance against the Maduro regime.
>> 02:59 - Also, think about that. This is a country that still produces some oil,
>> 03:04 - So they tend to buy loyalties around the region. And we saw that last year. Maduro is not a legitimate president.
>> 03:10 - He's a de facto dictator. He stole elections last years.
>> 03:13 - And the international community
>> 03:15 - Didn't pressure him and his regime enough to produce
>> 03:18 - The evidence of his suppose it win, because, again,
>> 03:22 - Many of these countries always vote along ideological line.
>> 03:26 - Ideological line.
>> 03:27 - But we know this is
>> 03:29 - Sort of a rogue nation. 8 million people, including myself
>> 03:34 - And many of my family members, have left because of the humanitarian crisis there.
>> 03:39 - So you're seeing also a country that has become the number one source of asylum seekers to the United States.
>> 03:45 - So for the Trump administration,
>> 03:47 - This is not only a drug problem, this is a migration problem.
>> 03:52 - And these are, as you know, President Trump's
>> 03:54 - Top domestic priorities.
>> 03:57 - Mariana Atencio, thank you so much.
>> 04:00 - Thank you Audie.
