Southern Brazil is once again under extreme weather alert due to a strong line of instability advancing over the state of Rio Grande do Sul, according to meteorological bulletins from the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) - the official body that monitors the climate in Brazil.

At this time of year, however, in 2024, 80% of the state of Rio Grande do Sul was affected by torrential rains that resulted in the deaths of dozens of people and an unprecedented wave of destruction across the Brazilian state. The population, which is still trying to recover from the scars of last year's bad weather, is scared about a new storm front that is approaching, according to the National Center of Meteorology.

At this time of year, the state of Rio Grande do Sul, as well as all of South America, are experiencing the autumn season, however, in recent days, the territory that borders the countries of Argentina and Uruguay, has experienced summer-like days with temperatures of 28°C to 32°C.

With the advance of a cold front towards a warm front, it is likely that there will be strong storms with intense rain, wind gusts of 40 km/h to 100 km/h and also a real chance of hail, initially in the West of Rio Grande do Sul, as reported by INMET and widely reported by other meteorological centers and professionals in the area.

This adverse weather condition is in effect according to the alert issued by INMET, which began at 10 am this Tuesday, May 6, as a yellow alert, changing to an orange alert on the morning of this Wednesday, May 7.

The yellow alert - classified as heavy rains, indicates that around 100 cities in Rio Grande do Sul are expected to register rainfall volumes of up to 50 millimeters and winds of up to 60 km/h. A small fraction of cities around the city of Uruguaiana are expected to face heavy rains of 100 millimeters or more, winds of up to 100 km/h and hail.

The Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul also issued warnings regarding bad weather, asking the population of municipalities that are in the path of severe weather to be alert to any anomalies that may occur through the storm.

This line of instability is being monitored by the meteorological centers of the states of Santa Catarina and Paraná, which are also part of the southern region of Brazil.

And finally, meteorological agencies predict that the rain will remain in the three southern states of Brazil for about 10 days, leaving the southern population distressed, as they experienced a catastrophic experience at this same time of year in 2024.
