South of Brazil | Two people died after a head-on collision between two cars on Saturday night, May 10, in the northwest of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, security forces reported.
The traffic accident occurred on state highway RS-305, on the border of the municipalities of Tucunduva and Tuparendi, and involved the vehicles Fiat/Uno and a Renault/Clio Sedan, with license plate INW-6F29 registered in the city of Viamão, also in Rio Grande do Sul.
At the scene of the accident, the driver of the Fiat/Uno was identified as Paulo Cassio Chitolina Helmich, who was taken for medical attention but was confirmed dead at the Tuparendi hospital. Passenger Luis José Lucas, who was also in the Fiat/Uno, died at the scene.
A man and a woman in the Clio were injured and taken to hospital in stable condition. Their ages and names were not released by authorities.
The Military Brigade Road Command that responded to the incident reported that the victims were transported by ambulances from the Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU, acronym in Portuguese) and by an ambulance from the city of Horizontina, which was passing by, also assisted in the care.
The causes of the accident are being investigated by the competent authorities. Traffic on the highway was controlled by agents from the Military Brigade's Highway Command while responding to the incident.
Traffic at kilometer 9 of the highway, near the bridge over the Saint Rose River, was controlled by agents of the Military Brigade's Highway Command during rescue work carried out by the Military Fire Department.
The causes of the accident are being investigated by the Civil Police of the municipality of Saint Rose.
