Of the 497 municipalities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, 474 of them are infested by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue fever, which has already resulted in 6,421 infections up until noon on April 12, according to a report by the State Health Department (SES).
The population of this Brazilian state is experiencing a dramatic situation due to the growing wave of dengue cases, especially in April, when the disease traditionally peaks. The situation has already caused five deaths: two of which were in Porto Alegre, the state capital, alone.
The figures released by the State Health Department reveal the dramatic situation: of the 6,421 infections, 5,524 are autochthonous, that is, contracted within the municipality itself. The incidence rate is 207 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In addition, there are more than 32,000 registered notifications, of which 16,442 are still awaiting conclusion.
The list of 10 municipalities with the highest number of dengue cases includes five in the Porto Alegre Metropolitan Region alone: Alvorada (217 cases), Cachoeirinha (94 cases), Gravataí (89 cases), Porto Alegre (1,211 cases) and Viamão (1,820 cases). The other five municipalities on the list are: Novo Hamburgo (669 cases), Cachoeira do Sul (675 cases), Planalto (184 cases), São Sepé (104 cases) and Sapucaia do Sul (96 cases).
In an interview with the Correio do Povo newspaper in Porto Alegre, Vânia Frantz - director of Primary Care at the Municipal Health Department (SMS) in the city of Porto Alegre - stated that “the behavior predicted for April has already been confirmed in the state capital, which is a critical month for dengue fever,” she warns.
The risk in Porto Alegre remains high. “The mosquito is present throughout the city. If an infected person walks around without repellent, they can take the disease to regions where there is no transmission yet,” concludes Vânia.
The state of Rio Grande do Sul is located in the extreme south of Brazil, bordering the countries of Uruguay and Argentina.
